A NOTE ON HOTEL GRADINGS
The gradings given by the AA and by Quality in Tourism (on behalf of Visit Britain) have been standardised so, for example, an hotel graded 3 stars by the AA will have been assessed against the same criteria as a 3 star hotel inspected and graded on behalf of Visit Britain.

However, establishments with the word 'Hotel' in their name may not be classified as hotels by the two inspecting authorities. Depending on its size and facilities offered, an establishment may be classed variously as one of a number of types of hotel (Hotel, Small Hotel, Country House Hotel, etc.,), an Inn, a Restaurant with Rooms or as Guest Accommodation. The listings below indicate the classification given to each establishment, which should be read in conjunction with its star grading.

A full explanation of the classifications used may be found on the websites of either the AA or Enjoy England (the division of Visit Britain that, as the name indicates, relates specifically to England.)
